Fresh out of FIT, Alyssa Collura is already doing great things. This spring, she participated in the school’s Future of Fashion show and was recently named a finalist in the MUUSE X VOGUE Talents Young Vision Award in hopes of having her collection produced along with a feature in Vogue Italia.
Inspired by an oil spill rainbow in the street, she sought to converge beauty with the irregularities in nature through pieces that revel in texture and iridescent color by way of her own hand-dying technique. Taking three different kinds of Alençon lace, an elaborate type of needle point fabric that dates back to the 16th century, she crafted it into various shapes, dyed and hand stitched it on to illusion fabric. Paring it with leather and suede and leaving it raw for an organic feel, the combination creates a look of sensual femininity. Simply put, Alyssa believes that it’s about “creating new interpretations to refresh the eye and sustain our relationship with beauty in nature.”
