Emerging Designer Spotlight: Arteaga

Marisol Arteaga’s fall/winter 2018 collection is perfectly suited for the season. Bold in color, meaning and texture, the New York-based designer of Arteaga that calls New Delhi her second home pulled inspiration from buildings in Pushkar, Rajasthan and the Louis Bourgeois retrospective at MoMA for the collection.

She told us, “That exhibit really moved me and one of the outcomes was that I set out to find the perfect red and worked to build a rich and earth-laden palette around that. I wanted the colors to make the wearer feel strong.” In fact, each piece is named after powerful women in history: warriors, style icons and civil rights leaders. The Septima dress in a tiered chiffon is an ode to educator and United States activist Septima Clark.

Tibetan red, imperial purple, oak leaf and mulled wine are some of the colors that make up her powerfully feminine pieces that come in a mix of silk chiffon, crepe and velvet. Designed with soft details like a ruffled collar, ruching and an off the shoulder option, the collection offers style and ease. The Bianca blouse in a red charmeuse pairs nicely with a black velvet bell trouser. There’s also the Malintzin dress that she calls your party armour made in a delicate knit and neckline in gold.

The self-taught designer studied art at the University of California, Berkley and learned on the job. She worked in fashion for over a decade in design and trend forecasting and by making a move to her own label allowed her to design for a specific type of woman while also bringing an artisan approach to the business. Arteaga also works with Craftmark, a certified artisan based factory that is ethically run and trains local villagers in traditional sewing and printing techniques.

My goal for Arteaga is to champion beautiful and unique indigenous textiles and techniques and to help create steady employment for weaving communities and artisanal cooperatives. We are dedicated to being ethically produced. That and making beautiful things.
