This fall, the Museum at FIT has organized another series of lectures and events free to the public. From in-depth talks with historians, authors and today’s fashion influencers, there’s plenty to learn during the next few months. 

1. Exposed Talks and Tours

Learn more about Exposed, The History of Lingerie. Colleen Hill, associate curator of accessories, traces developments in intimate apparel from the 18th century to the present, showing that as the relationship between dress and the body has been redefined over time, so too have the function and appearance of lingerie.

2. Homer Layne: My Life with Charles James at the Chelsea Hotel
Homer Layne was the trusted assistant to renowned American couturier Charles James. Join Layne as he is interviewed by Dorothea Mink, professor for fashion design at the University of the Arts, Bremen, Germany. Following the interview, Layne will give a demonstration of Charles James’ approach to draping.

3. Dance and Fashion Talk and Tours
.
Dance & Fashion explores the relationship between two great embodied art forms: dance and fashion. Organized by Valerie Steele, this exhibition focuses on dance costumes created by fashion designers and fashions inspired by dance. The emphasis is on ballet and modern dance, but other dance forms, such as tango, flamenco, and stepping, are featured.

4. The Future of Fashion Tech
.
Eric Wilson of InStyle magazine will moderate this panel examining how the internet has transformed the business of fashion. Designer Alvin Valley, Gilt founder Alexandra Wilson, and Brandon Holley, former editor in chief of Lucky magazine will consider the future of e-commerce 
.

5. Film Screening: Flamenco, Flamenco

Join us for a screening of clips from Carlos Saura’s documentary film Flamenco, Flamenco, followed by a conversation with Spanish fashion designer Agatha Ruiz de la Prada, choreographer Blanca Li, and FIT Associate Professor of Film, Media, and Performing Arts Michelle Handelman.

A pioneering figure in film and video for more than four decades, Charles Atlas will screen films of his work with choreographers Merce Cunningham and Michael Clark, and his latest documentary, Turning, a collaboration with Antony and the Johnsons. Joining him will be Michelle Handelman, FIT associate professor of Film, Media, and Performing Arts

7. The Scandals of Schiaparelli
.
Join Meryle Secrest for a presentation of her new book, Elsa Schiaparelli: A Biography, the first in-depth telling of the colorful life story of this great couturier and surrealist. A Pulitzer Prize–nominated biographer, Secrest was awarded a National Humanities Medal in 2006
.

8. Dance Performance: Lamentation and Spectre-1914
.
Members of the Martha Graham Dance Company will perform two of Graham’s classic solos, Lamentation and Spectre-1914, to be followed by a discussion with artistic director Janet Eilber, Doo-Ri Chung, a designer inspired by Graham’s synthesis of movement and fabric, and Melissa Marra, MFIT associate curator of education

9. Handmaking Luxury – Challenges to Artisan Enterprise Development

How artisan-focused companies foster economic development will be the focus of a lively discussion with Adrienne Chaillé of Green Design Link; Annie Millican of Dara Artisans; Jasmine Aarons, CEO and design director of VOZ; Emily Green, founder and lead designer of emiLime handcrafted; Luna Lee of the Social Consciousness Department at Eileen Fisher; and Dr. Regina A. Root, associate professor of Hispanic studies at the College of William and Mary.

10. Poupie and Patricia Cadolle in Conversation with Colleen Hill

Join Colleen Hill, curator of the exhibition Exposed: A History of Lingerie, for a conversation with Poupie and Patricia Cadolle about their family-run business, founded in Paris in 1889 by Herminie Cadolle—an early advocate of the modern brassiere. Cadolle is one of the few lingerie brands that continue to offer couture lingerie.

11. Team Vicious Steppers Workshop

Rick Owens made headlines when the Team Vicious Steppers presented his spring/summer 2014 collection. In this workshop, you can learn the steps they used to storm the runway in Paris, followed by a Q&A with lead stepper LeeAnét Noble, whose company’s mission is “to fuse a variety of art forms into one loud announcement of power and beauty.”
