8 Reasons to Apply to the 2015 Class of Design Entrepreneurs NYC
Design Entrepreneurs NYC is now recruiting for their fourth class. This free mini-MBA program for top New York-talent provides a unique mix of business skills, resources and community to New York-based fashion brands to help them grow their companies. We sat down with FIT to understand the benefits of the program and why a designer should apply:
1. Top talent representing New York City
Design Entrepreneurs NYC was originally created by the FIT and the NYCEDC. Each fashion business selected into the program must run a business in the 5 boroughs and will represent some of the top talent in New York City.
2. Tailored classes
Designers are immersed into an intense, specialized curriculum tailored to help them scale their fashion business. With topics like branding, marketing, operations and financials taught by industry experts and FIT instructors, participants learn relevant information needed to grow their business.
3. Dedicated mentor
Each fashion company is paired with a mentor to help them create and evaluate their business plan no matter what stage they are in their company. Designers have access to their mentor throughout the duration of the program for on-going support.
4. Community of designers
Over the years, the program has fostered a community of designers that have formed friendships, collaborations and share information with one another. Past designers include Chromat, Parke & Ronen, David Hart, Wwake, Adeen, BodyBinds, ISLYNYC and a list of others.
5. Free classes at FIT
During the summer, designers are able to take classes from the Center of Continuing Education and Professional Studies. Some of these options include, Excel for fashion designers, QuickBooks, retail math, Import and Export series and more.
6. Presentation skills workshop
All designers are required to attend a pitch workshop to help strengthen their presentation skills and learn how to pitch to investors and articulate the main components of their business plan.
7. A business plan
The program's deliverable is to complete a business plan. Designers that have done this have walked away with a roadmap for years to come, confidence in their business and have seen it open doors for other business opportunities.
8. $150,000 in cash prizes
