Emerging Designer Spotlight: Uye Surana

Wearable, effortless and intricate. That's what emerging designer Monica Wesley uses to describe her brand Uye Surana, a New York-based line that is a combination of her parent's last names.

With an artistic edge, she fuses her experience from her studies at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and design sensibilities from Parsons to create limited quantity runs. The label has a relaxed aesthetic using a mix of silks, hand-dyed fabrics and combines special detailing that can be mixed and layered easily.

This season she plays with memory and nostalgia and incorporates a few 1940s inspired silhouettes and her family in the details. Her signature, a heart-shaped photographic print of her mom and grandma can be seen on her lightweight washed silk perfect top. Her olive flowing skirt, a beautiful free-flowing piece uses the same print, this time fade and paired with an ombre treatment.

With layering elements as its foundation, these pieces transition nicely into fall. She's even has a few playful undergarments in the collection like her  leather and jersey bra that can be paired  knit trim shorts or any of her carefree dresses for a casual affair.
