Tessa Clark wanted to create a brand that women would wear for years. Easy, timeless and minimal is how she approached her first capsule collection. The thoughtfulness of her label has its roots in her childhood; a self-proclaimed country girl, she told us that her mother was a potter and her father was a flour miller. Her label, Grind & Glaze, was inspired by their work.

Through her studies and professional work, she learned more about the environmental and ethical issues that the fashion industry faces and wanted to do her part by creating a business focused on sustainability.

I think eco-friendly and sustainable fashion is often viewed as crunchy granola – and I want people to see that eco friendly and sustainable clothing doesn’t have to be
a boxy linen dress. Sustainable fashion can be modest, but sexy. To me, less is more is luxury.Minimal design, quality fabrics that lasts wear after wear – that is luxury.

Her pieces represent a new wave of ethical brands which merges thoughtful materials, clean design, and quality fabrics. It also shows the duality of raw and rugged finishes and materials with a sophisticated point-of-view. The brand’s Millrace dress in moonlight black serves as a staple. It’s refreshing with an open back. The bridge top is a modern take on an apron that gently hugs the body. Best of all, the silhouettes can be built upon and each furthers her commitment to longevity.

Aiming to be zero waste, she’s won’t purchase new fabrics until her existing stock is done and plans to use leftover scraps for her next collection. Her production is done in Cincinnati in small batches in a shared space where she has access to tools, machinery and community - another piece of the fashion ecosystem she hopes to build.
