MBFW: Academy of Art University Spring/Summer 14 Review
In its ninth season at Mercedes-Benz fashion week, 10 emerging designers from the School of Fashion at the Academy of Art University presented their collections on the runway.
Taking inspiration from Giorgio Armani's wardrobe in American Gigolo, Didvik Kuang showed a menswear collection with a lounge wear spin. Think clean over-sized tops and jackets paired with double leg pants in a khaki oat accessorized with colorful scarves for contrast. Gwen Shiyaho Lai told a story of prints, burnouts and ikats that were shown from head to toe on suits as well as a long dress and vest. Her bleaching technique represented the sunlight and fire from nature and showed her talent to manipulate fabric. Showing a slice of Americana, Marine Rongroung Wei used vintage inspiration for his collection. A denim jacket, crisp button-downs and boxy blazers modernized the collection and incorporating polka dots and stripes also helped sell in this patriotic influence.
As part of a collaboration, Shanshan Bai and Winbo Shiau nailed what they called "street-chic" which could easily be seen on any effortless downtown muse. Their more sculptural pieces like the jacket and skirts were a refreshing take on knitwear.
